A Los Banos teacher and an Atwater bilingual aide were recognized as the best in the county Tuesday night at the Excellence in Education awards ceremony at the Merced Theatre.
Sergio de Alba, a sixth-grade teacher at R.M. Miano Elementary School in Los Banos, was named Teacher of the Year. Anjelica Dillsaver, a bilingual aide at Thomas Olaeta Elementary School in Atwater, was named School Employee of the Year.
The Excellence in Education awards ceremony is sponsored annually by the Educational Employees Credit Union and the Merced County Office of Education. There were five nominees for School Employee of the Year and nine for Teacher of the Year.
Dillsaver has worked at Thomas Olaeta for five years, primarily helping English learners. She currently is studying to become a teacher. She said she was honored to receive the award.
“At Thomas Olaeta, everyone is a superstar,” she said. “When you work among superstars, you tend to shine. That’s the kind of environment we work in. We all work together.”
De Alba has been a teacher for 15 years at R.M. Miano. He said the award is a great honor and that he loves teaching.
“I really do love my job and being able to instill hope in my students’ lives and being able to make a difference,” he said.
De Alba will move on to the state awards program honoring teachers.
