If you see people dropping their spare change into a gigantic boot on the corner of Mercey Springs Road and Pacheco Boulevard Friday, rest assured it’s for a good cause.

The Los Banos Fire Department and Merced County Cal Fire are hoping residents continue to fill their boots with donations to benefit the Firefighters Burn Institute, a California-based firefighter-run charity organization that provides funding for services to burn victims, including firefighters.

The annual “Fill the Boot” campaign will be held between 7 a.m. and noon. Along with bringing out the big boot, Los Banos and Merced County firefighters and staff will ask motorists at the intersection if they would like to donate to the cause.

“In the last 15 years, probably, we’ve raised at least $50,000 to $60,000,” Los Banos Assistant Fire Chief Mason Hurley said. Recently, the event has raised several thousands of dollars per year.
