Merced police are investigating a dead body found in a park area near the Rascal Bike Path off of Highway 59, officials said.
Officers responded Saturday to a field area behind the 3200 block of Cheyenne Drive after calls came in at 3:02 p.m. of a person who appeared to be dead, Merced Police Capt. Bimley West said.
The officers found a deceased adult male in his 30s who appears to have been dead for several days, West said.
Detectives were called out to the scene and an investigation was underway Saturday afternoon, West said, noting that authorities haven't ruled out suspicious causes.
Items were discovered in the area indicating that there was transient activity, West said. But it was unknown if the dead individual was homeless, and if the death was related to any transients in the area.
The Merced County Coroner's Office will determine cause of death, West said.
