For four Pacheco High wrestlers and one Los Banos wrestler, the CIF State Girls Wrestling Championships ended sooner than they hoped.
Los Banos High’s Carla Diaz came one win away from placing in the top eight (medals only go to the top six) in the 150-pound bracket, while Pacheco’s Taryn Mitchell (126 pounds), Miranda Lamela (131), Myranda Velazquez (150) and Lucia Contreras (235) all fell before that.
Diaz won her first match against Tustin’s Jasmine Cordero, the eighth-place finisher from the Southern Section, then fell in the second round to San Diego Section champion Haley Halsey of Rancho Buena Vista. She dropped into the consolation bracket, where she immediately faced the Central Section champion, Lucie Mendoza from Delano. Diaz pinned her and American Canyon’s Victoria Cifelli before losing by pin to Rhina Lopez from the Southern Section’s Dominguez High.
“I think the first loss was harder on her than not placing. She was a win away from placing and two wins away from medals. There were a lot of tough girls there,” Los Banos girls coach Jose Castro said. “All the five girls of our section all got out before placing. Carla and the champion of Masters (Tokay’s Madisen Bozovich) were the two that made it the furthest, and both went out the same round.”
Castro said Diaz is already making plans to get back and get farther her senior year.
“She’s ready now to go back to work,” Castro said. “The ride home was pretty interesting – ‘I need to do this, I need to do that, need to watch my weight better.’ Some of the girls in her weight class made her look small. She stayed in the same weight class, but it was pretty obvious some of the girls in her class cut weight to get there.”
For Pacheco, Mitchell dropped her first-round match by pin, then won her first consolation match before falling to Talisha Dozier of Mt. Miguel in the San Diego Section. Lamela went 0-2, dropping out of her consolation match for an injury default. Velazquez had a first-round by and fell to Southern Section runner up Brenda Perez of Santa Ana, then dropped her first consolation match to another Southern Section wrestler, Jackie Trujillo of West Covina. Contreras went 0-2, losing by pin in both matches.
