The most intense game of the season for the Los Banos varsity boys basketball team may well have been the one that doesn't count.
The Los Banos varsity boys lost 75-65 in the alumni game Saturday after leading 37-30 at halftime.
"It's the same thing every year, we (the varsity team) just can't compete with the size," said LB athletic director and former LB basketball coach Joe Barcellos, who coached the alumni team. "Those guys are going to be just fine."
Jesus Estrada, a 2003 LBHS graduate, led all scorers with 25 points, all in the second half. He enjoyed almost all of his points in the paint, and was 9 of 11 from the charity stripe.
"This let us play a big, physical team. We're not going to play a big team like that all year," first-year Los Banos coach Mike Bonillas said. "From top to bottom, they're all big guys that actually play. It's a good opportunity for them to play some experienced guys that are a little bit more physical than they're going to run into."
Joey Bennett led the varsity team with 16 points, and Javier Garcia added nine. Barcellos applied a full-court man press in the third quarter, and which led to a 24-17 quarter for the alumni.
"We're competitive guys. That's why we work so well together," Bonillas said. "I grew up playing for (Barcellos) and coaching with him. We're competitive people.
"This is going to be fun. I'm going to look forward to this every year."
Los Banos returns an experienced, senior-heavy team, and several players fresh off a football playoff loss the night before suited up but didn't play.
"These guys have played together for a long time," Bonillas said. "It gives us a little extra leadership, a little bit more team understanding of what's going on, what I expect out of them and what it means."
The alumni, with many of the same players, defeated the junior varsity team 64-28 after leading 32-5 at halftime. Earlier, a team made up of staff defeated the freshman team 72-27.
