A documented teen gang member was placed under arrest Tuesday after he was allegedly found to be in possession of a loaded gun, police said.
Cmdr. Ray Reyna Jr. said gang Detectives Eduardo Solis and Jake Bento were on patrol in the area of Idaho Avenue and West I Street at 4:48 p.m. when they observed a 15-year-old male walking in the area. The detectives recognized the teen as a documented local gang member, Reyna said.
The detectives stopped the juvenile because they received information that he had recently been in possession of a firearm.
Police said when the detectives questioned the 15-year-old about the firearm, he became very nervous and attempted to turn away. The juvenile was detained, and a loaded handgun was discovered in his waistband, police said.
The juvenile was placed under arrest on suspicion of possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of a concealed firearm, participation in a criminal street gang and being a minor in possession of ammunition.
He was booked into Merced County Juvenile Hall.
“We’ve had many cases in Los Banos where firearms get in the wrong hands and are used to commit horrible crimes,” Reyna said. “I’m proud to report our staff was able to safely remove another gun from our streets before it was used to harm someone.”
