A man is in jail after allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, Los Banos police reported.

Detective Sgt. Ivan Mendez said police were called to Memorial Hospital, Los Banos to speak with a stabbing victim at 12:40 a.m. Sunday. Mendez said the victim, a male in his 30s, told police he was stabbed in the upper torso at a residence on the 500 block of Pinion Avenue.

“It was like a love triangle,” Mendez said. “This guy was with his ( the suspect’s) ex-girlfriend and he caught him.”

Mendez said the suspect, Andy Chavez, 51, fled the scene after the incident.

Chavez was spotted by police on the 700 block of Delaware Avenue at 7 p.m. Sunday. Mendez said Chavez ran from police, but was apprehended a short time later on Pinion Avenue.

Chavez was arrested on suspicion of burglary and assault. He is being held at the Los Banos Jail in lieu of $80,000 bond.

The victim was airlifted to a Modesto area hospital and is reportedly in stable condition.
