Trejo at Far Westerns

Los Banos’ Emily Trejo, swimming for the Merced Skimmers, began competition at the 2014 Speedo Far Western Championships on Wednesday in Concord, taking almost a second off her time in the 50-meter breaststroke (41.76 seconds). She was back in action Thursday night for that event’s finals (results were not available at press time) and will return Friday for the 50-meter freestyle and the 200-meter individual medley.

Locals in the minors

A pair of local high school graduates are plugging away in the minors – Cody Martin (Dos Palos High) with the triple-A Gwinnett Braves in the Atlanta Braves organization, and Derick Velazquez (Los Banos High) with the single-A-short season Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York Penn League in the Houston Astros organization.

Martin, who played college baseball at Gonzaga, is 6-6 in 21 appearances for Gwinnett (20 of them starts. He earned a save in his one relief appearance), with a 3.45 earned-run average in 120 innings pitched. He has 105 strikeouts.

Velazquez has made nine relief appearances for the ValleyCats, with a 2.61 ERA and an 0-1 record. He has given up three runs in 10.1 innings, and has notched a pair of saves.
