American Legion and VFW keep
faithful watch on Old Glory
Local American Legion Post 166 members attend school flag raisings on several holidays during the year. We provide Flag Color Guard service at local events and we provide military honors, including the folding and presentation of the flag, at military funerals both at the Los Banos Cemetery and the San Joaquin National Cemetery.
As advocates and educators of proper flag etiquette, we routinely advise businesses and individuals on the proper display of the flag. It should not be displayed in inclement weather unless it is weather proof ; it should not be displayed and night unless illuminated; and it should be in a serviceable condition – not tattered, torn, faded, dirty or stained.
Periodically we receive reports from people passing through town who see flags that are in disrepair or unserviceable. We contact the business or individual and tell them of the report.
We then offer to properly destroy the old flag and provide them with information about where to obtain a new flag. Our members also go throughout the city and put up flags in front of homes and businesses.
We put them out (weather permitting) at 6:30 a.m. and pick them up at 4 p.m. Any business or individual can have this service. There is a charge the first year and then there is a yearly, tax deductible donation. For more information, call Rick Toscano at (209) 675-6134 or Mike Hughes at (209) 704-5301.

Time to vote out the Democrats
With the California general election coming in November, the liberal media and others are endorsing Jerry Brown and other Democrats. These are the people who have controlled California for 30 years, and what do we have to show for it? Some of the highest taxes in the country and more people on welfare than working. Last month, Toyota decided to leave California for Texas, taking 2,000 jobs. This isn’t surprising, as Texas encourages job growth and lets people keep more of their money. The way Democrats stay in control is by seeing to it that more people receive government handouts. They are more interested in giving money away than creating jobs. They make it easy to get welfare, even people who are not entitled to it. There are many thousands of illegal aliens and many others who just do not want to work. It is time to have a state like Texas, where the government encourages job growth, not welfare expansion. Vote for conservatives. Politicians who promote welfare are corrupt and the people who vote for them are dumb.
David J. Silva, Los Banos
Editor’s note: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, there are 17.2 million working Californians while 1.4 million Californians are unemployed.
