The Los Banos Planning Commission recently voted to approve a conditional use permit to a party wanting to open a mixed martial arts fitness gym.

The business will be at 60 W. G St., Suite A. Owners of Conquer MMA Fitness plan to have the business open seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. It will offer fitness plans for basics, USA boxing and wrestling, MMA, kick boxing, jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and self defense.

The owner is a professional lightweight MMA fighter out of Dos Palos, said Assistant Planner Stacy Elms.

“These families and children will be able to be influenced by professionals,” Elms said. “It’s a great opportunity for the city of Los Banos to have this business here.”

Planning Commissioner John Cates expressed his excitement over the potential new business. “I just want to thank you for trying this out, getting a little bit of a different flavor of fitness going on,” he said.

Cates also was concerned about whether the applicant would be adding any staff to his business.

“One of my biggest focuses is seeing what businesses come in … and what it could do help boost our city employment base,” Cates said.

Planning Commissioner Tom Spada echoed Cates‘ remarks, saying the business will be a good addition to the city.

In other actions, the commission also voted to approve a mobile vendor permit to a party looking at opening Tacos El Rey, a food truck that will serve tacos, burritos and more. The business will be at 1245 W. Pacheco Blvd.
