Memorial service to be held for war dead May 23, 2014

Those who died while serving our country will be remembered at a number of Memorial Day weekend services.

Flag-raising ceremonies by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2487 and American Legion Post 166 are scheduled at Los Banos elementary schools today. The observances will begin at Volta, Lorena Falasco and Mercey Springs Elementary schools at 8 a.m., at Henry Miller at 8:45 a.m. and at Los Banos Elementary at 9:15 a.m.

The San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery is the sixth in the state and 114th in the National Cemetery Administration. It is the site of a regional service set for 10 a.m. Sunday, on the cemetery grounds, 32053 W. McCabe Road.

There will be a traditional rifle salute and the playing of taps, along with a featured speaker. Local posts and veteran organizations will also present their colors.

After the ceremony, families and friends visit the grave sites of loved ones.

Closer to home, the Los Banos Cemetery District will salute the fallen beginning at 9:30 a.m. Monday. The cemetery is at 16675 S. Center Ave.

Also, area veterans groups will display flags around businesses and at residences beginning at 6:30 a.m. Monday

The annual “Buddy Poppy” distribution will take place May 30.

The fabric flowers are made by veterans who share the money received through the donations. This effort began in 1922 as a way to raise money for needy and disabled veterans after World War I. The tradition continues because subsequent wars have kept creating more and more disabled and needy veterans.
