Memorial Hospital Los Banos is always looking for volunteers.

For more information or to get involved, contact philanthropy coordinator Michelle Marchese at (209) 826-0591.

Potential volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and must go through a screening process.

He’s the lone wolf in an area dominated by women.

So it’s no surprise that David Pacheco is “surprised” to be named Volunteer of the Year at Memorial Hospital Los Banos.

“I’m only one guy working with about 24 ladies,” he said. “I’m surprised they didn’t choose a lady.”

Pacheco and his fellow volunteers were honored at a recent luncheon.

The 2014 recipient has been volunteering at Memorial Hospital since he moved to the area about four years ago, he said. Helping at the hospital is his way of giving back, he said.

“My son was very ill, and I’ve seen what the hospital staff does ... and my wife has been ill … I like to give back for some of the services I’ve received.”

Philanthropy coordinator Michelle Marchese said the volunteers couldn’t have voted for a better person.

“David is very engaged,” she said. “He is very compassionate about what he does.”

Volunteers take on responsibilities such as greeting, directing and guiding families as they arrive.

“My first responsibility is to the patient or family coming into the hospital,” Pacheco said.

Pacheco has developed a knack for helping loved ones find their way through the hospital.

“You can tell that he also has the patient’s and their family’s best interest at heart,” Marchese said.

Pacheco was selected by his peers. He averages three-hour shifts, three days a week, but will often be found working double shifts.

Marchese said the volunteers represent the hospital in a great way and are, therefore, included in many of its activities throughout the year.

“We feel that they’re a huge part of the hospital,” she said. “We couldn’t do what we do without having the volunteer department help us.”
