Students in Stacy Betschart’s second-grade class brought a special guest to school Thursday - their moms.

Westside Union Elementary’s Muffins for Moms brings together mothers, grandmothers, aunts or older sisters with their little ones to celebrate right before Mother’s Day.

“It gives the students an opportunity to have their parents come into our classroom and share a special time with them,” she said.

Pink table clothes covered the desks of Betschart’s classroom, as students sat next to their special guest with muffins and juice.

Students gave their moms their photographs glued to handmade paper flowers, and decorative plates were ready for the moms to take home.

This is about the 10th year Betschart has organized the gathering.

“This year I brought the idea up to my colleagues,” she said, “and so all of the second grade decided they’d like to participate.”

In the quad area, all four second-grade classes joined together to sing a song for the special guests, and Lifetouch was on campus to take photos of youngsters and their special loved ones.

Monica Gallagher was invited by her 8-year-old daughter Brooklyn.

Gallagher said this was her first time attending the special event.

“I didn’t expect it to be this nice,” she said. “A lot of effort goes into putting something like this together. It shows Westside’s true colors, and that they value family.”

Brooklyn said she just loves spending time with her mom. To be able to spend the morning at school with Mom made her feel “really happy,” Brooklyn

Betschart said she wants moms and other family members to feel special and hopes Muffins for Moms keeps growing.

“I hope it continues,” Betschart said. “What would be an ideal goal is to get all of the classrooms involved.

“It would be a nice opportunity for all the parents of Westside to be able to participate.”
