A Mother’s Day tradition will continue next weekend as scores of families descend on Pacheco Park.

The Los Banos Tiger Sharks draw hundreds to their annual Mother’s Day in the Park event, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 10 and 11 at the intersection of Seventh Street and Pacheco Boulevard. The Los Banos Kiwanis Club hosts a breakfast at the event on May 11.

So far the gathering will include 45 food and craft vendors. It will also feature dance performances and music.

Benito Marquez, Los Banos Tiger Sharks president and Mother’s Day in the Park coordinator, said people attend the two-day event for different reasons.

“A lot of people go Saturday to see what they have; Sunday is basically Mother’s Day and a lot of people go at the last minute to see if they can find something they can give something to their mother ,” coordinator Benito Marquez said.

There will also be an assortment costume jewelry, purses, hats, knickknacks and other items at the event.

Marquez said a raffle with prizes geared toward women will be held this year.

“We’re trying to give something to the mothers,” he said.

Mother’s Day in the Park will also include Folklorico dancers and martial arts demonstrations.

The event is a fundraiser for the Tiger Sharks swim team. Marquez said Mother’s Day in the Park, which began nearly three decades ago, started as a way for children to buy gifts for their mothers. He said he doesn’t want that original concept to go away.

Typically Mother’s Day in the Park draws women accompanied by children who range from toddler to adult.

The Los Banos Kiwanis Club’s annual breakfast fundraiser and raffle is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Mother’s Day at the event. The money goes toward scholarships.
