Los Banos — The sweet goodness of a freshly baked cinnamon roll is oftentimes all one needs while visiting the Merced County Spring Fair. The tasty treat is featured every year by husband and wife Dane and Dara Baldwin, who team up to roll out fresh dough daily.
The Baldwins, who own D&D Country Fair Cinnamon Rolls, have been serving in Los Banos for more than 30 years.
It takes four basic ingredients for the Baldwins to make cinnamon rolls. Along with butter, cinnamon and sugar, they use an original flour mixture.
“It’s a special patented flour,” said Dane Baldwin, “something no one else can get but us.”
Of course, the Oakhurst couple would not reveal their recipe, but they reassured that it’s what makes their cinnamon rolls so special.
They also make their own cream cheese frosting and purchase locally grown nuts.
More than 2,000 pounds of flour, 600 pounds of butter and 750 pounds of cinnamon and sugar will be used over the five-day fair run in Los Banos.
“All of our rolls are made from scratch, all day, every day,” he said. “Nothing is prepackaged. Every cinnamon roll is handmade and freshly baked.”
The Baldwins said they taste every cinnamon roll they come across to put their minds at ease that they are dishing up what’s best for the communities they serve.
“Los Banos is one of our favorite stops on the tour,” Dane Baldwin said. “The general public, the hospitality, fair management, all the way around, it’s a nice place to be.”
Fairgoers can spend $4.50 for an original cinnamon roll; $5.50 with nuts; $5.50 with cream cheese frosting; and $6.50 with nuts plus cream cheese frosting. Each cinnamon roll is about a half-pound, the couple said.
The company also offers frozen you-bake cinnamon rolls for fairgoers to “take a little bit of the fair with you after the fair is gone,” Dane added. D&D travels all over the state between Santa Rosa and San Diego to serve at fairs and special events. It has been family-owned and operated since 1978.
