Chance of showers today

— After a chance of rainfall today, the week ahead looks promising for some enjoyable time outdoors.

A weak storm is rolling in off the Pacific Coast, bringing a 20 percent chance of showers, but should clear up by the weekend, according to a meteorologist.

“Showers will taper off in the evening and pretty much be gone by midnight,” said Gary Sanger, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Hanford.

Expect a high of around 66 and a low of 45 today.

The weekend will bring in warmer weather as the storm weakens. “It’s going to be dry and warm,” he said.

A high of around 70 is forecast for Saturday and 78 on Sunday.

“Through the middle of the week, it’s going to be dry and unseasonably warm,” he said.

Los Banos captured a good amount of rain this week. Between March 27 and April 3, 1.14 inches of rain was recorded.

The normal for March is 1.47 inches, according to Sanger. Rainfall is nowhere near the “March Miracle” that brought some relief in 1991.

A typical wet season begins in July and lasts through June, according to meteorologists.

“The March 1991 rainfall was when we got a fairly strong El Nino, and that brought storms into the valley,” he said.

Los Banos captured 3.36 inches of rain in March of 1991; while the whole year received 7.53 inches of rain.

“We had just come out of three years of drought,” he said. “It didn’t help enough, at least not on the West Side of the Valley. ’91 still fell short of the normal for year.”
