A musical and comic twist on the many aspects of Portuguese culture will highlight a show next week at the DES Hall.
The four-person The Portuguese Kids will highlight the funnier side of growing up Portuguese through sketch, music and improv, followed by the Luso Tones, from 8 p.m to midnight March 15 at the DES Hall, 1155 I St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Originally from southeastern Massachusetts, The Portuguese Kids have performed all over the country.
Luso Tones manager and drummer Joey Bertao said the band will play while people dance.
Bertao and most of the members of the Luso Tones had been long-time fans of The Portuguese Kids, and even set up the sound for a few of their performances. They connected and decided to perform together. We kicked around the idea (of) how it would be cool to do a show (together), he said.
Bertao set up the DES performance in Los Banos in October.
We wanted to get a city where they (The Portuguese Kids) havent performed yet, he said. They usually get hired out to different cities with a Portuguese community, basically. Theyve done Livingston, Modesto (and) Tulare, so were trying to figure out a place that has a Portuguese community that they havent been to yet, so Los Banos came to mind.
The Luso Tones have been around since 2010. Its an eight-member band consisting of some family members from the Tulare, Chowchilla and Turlock area.
The band has a full horn line, drum, guitar, bass and a lead singer who performs Portuguese, Brazilian and Latin music. A majority is in Portuguese and Brazilian, he said, and 10 percent in American and Spanish.
Most of the Luso Tone band members have a musical background and have played in Portuguese marching bands and performed in festas paredes.
I think (Los Banos) is a good location, Bertao said. The show isnt all in Portuguese, a majority is in English but the things they talk about and some words here and there are Portuguese.
