An officer-involved shooting was reported in the Santa Nella area late Saturday night after someone tried to run over two California Highway Patrol officers, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported.
Neither of the officers were hurt. Although the incident involved CHP officers, the sheriff's department has been asked to conduct an investigation into the shooting, which is routine.
Details about the case are still preliminary.
Deputy Delray Shelton, sheriff's spokesman, said the incident was reported just after 11:30 p.m. at the Valero gas station at 12845 Highway 33.
The officers were at the station and witnessed someone trying to steal beer from the station. The officers tried to stop the thief, who got into a silver 2003 Mitsubishi and fled.
A vehicle pursuit ensued in Santa Nella. At some point during the incident, the driver tried to run the officers over in the area of Monterey Court, Shelton said.
One of the officers discharged his firearm when the assailant tried to run them over. Shelton said it does not appear that anyone inside the suspect car was hit.
Deputies later recovered the suspect vehicle a short distance away from the gas station, in a trailer park. The suspect remains at large.
Deputies are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the sheriff's office at (209) 385-7445. Tips are kept confidential and you can remain anonymous.
