The Los Banos High girls basketball team went 3-0 over the weekend to win the Hilmar Holiday Tournament.
The Tigers defeated Summerville 55-51 on Dec. 19, Hilmar 59-49 on Friday and Mariposa 61-41 in the championship on Saturday.
Jacquelin Arretche scored 23 points against Summerville, 22 against Hilmar and 25 against Mariposa, draining 13 3-pointers in the three games to earn the tournaments MVP honors.
Shes been putting up a lot of minutes, and I think her legs have been tired, Los Banos coach Danny Crosby said. So Ive been getting her some rest between quarters. She goes 100 percent all the time, defensively and offensively, and with all the games weve played, its been tough for her.
LB post player Evelyn Johnson was named to the all-tournament team as well after bringing down 11 offensive and 24 defensive rebounds throughout the three days.
Theyre huge. Being able to have some bigs out there that get some boards for us has been helping out a lot, Crosby said. I keep telling her, these are volleyball skills. Youre a middle blocker in volleyball, and if she uses some of those same kills, shell have double-digit rebounds every game.
Shes been coming around and Miriam (Guzman)s been coming around.
One area where the Tigers at not coming around is with free throws the team hit 27 of 67 from the charity stripe during the tournaments three games.
We havent had a whole lot of practice time with all the games weve played in the month of December, Crosby said. Concerned? Not really, we just want to start working on things. Im kind of counting on the girls to work on some of that on their own.
The Tigers (8-3) have played all 11 of their games this month (12 if you include the foundation game on Dec. 2), and with four more to go before the new year, it hasnt left a lot of time to sit around shooting free throws, or even to work on offenseive and defensive drills.
Los Banos is on the road again this weekend at the West Coast Jamboree, and started with San Lorenzo on Thursday (results were unavailable at press time). The four-day event attracts top programs from all over California.
If we can come out of there with three wins, thatll be great, Crosby said. I think we have an opportunity to win our bracket, if we just handle our business playing basketball, it should give us a great boost heading into league.
Theres some pretty big talent there. Well just have to show up and see what we can do.
The Los Banos boys had a rougher go at the Hilmar tournament, going 1-2. The Tigers dropped the opener to Summerville, then defeated Hilmar 36-32 in the consolation bracket before losing 49-44 to Mariposa in the consolation championship.
