Letter to the Editor: Measure K

November 2, 2013

As a retired police chief and current president of the Merced Area Crime Stoppers, I am writing this letter in support of Measure K.

I have been a longtime member of this community and I have always been thankful that this is one of the safest places to raise a family.

I have been here for 41 years and have no intentions of leaving. It is where my wife and I raised our children and is now home to our grandchildren.

Unfortunately, due to a downturn in the economy, things needed to be changed in how money that was dedicated to purchase facilities for the Police and Fire departments needed to be diverted to pay for staff.

We as a community are digging out of this mess and Police and Fire were able to keep up with minimal staffing by using the funds from Measure P after getting approval from the Citizens Oversight Committee.

This measure will not add taxes for the citizens of Los Banos, but will allow the city to use the funds for staffing until the cost can once again be taken out of the city’s general fund.

Our city manager and police and fire chiefs have come up with a plan to shift payment for all of these positions back into the general fund over a period of time.

It would be ashame to have less coverage for response to emergencies than we currently have. If we don’t vote for Measure K we will still be paying the half-cent sales tax and it will go toward facilities. Please join me in voting yes on Measure K. -
