A pizza delivery driver is at home recuperating from injuries she suffered after trying to prevent her car from being stolen Thursday night, police said.

Cmdr. Ray Reyna Jr. said officers responded to an apartment complex in the 1500 Block of Canal Farm Lane at 9:40 p.m. regarding a woman who was trapped under a vehicle.

When officers arrived they learned that several neighbors had assisted the victim by lifting the vehicle off her body. The victim, who was suffering from burns to her body, told police she was a pizza delivery driver who had just made a delivery to an apartment inside the complex. She said she left her vehicle running and noticed two females attempting to drive away in her car as she returned from delivering the food.

Police said when the two suspects saw the car’s owner they abandoned the vehicle while it was in motion. The victim attempted to pursue the suspects, tripped in the path of the vehicle and became trapped under the car.

She was airlifted to a Modesto Hospital for her injuries and was treated and released.

“It’s sad that this young lady had to suffer these injuries attempting to work and make a living in our community,” Reyna said. “We believe someone knows who was responsible for this inexcusable crime and we urge them to do the right thing and come forward.”
