Police to motorists: Do not speed

By Enterprise staffOctober 25, 2013

About 150 speeding tickets were handed out in September as law enforcement placed a special interest on catching motorists throughout town who drive too fast.

The Los Banos Police Department increased its traffic enforcement efforts citywide last month with the goal of educating drivers about the importance of safe driving. Special emphasis was placed in areas that have been identified to have a higher volume of traffic traveling in an unsafe manner.

“We attempt to utilize our resources as best as possible in order to gain a higher impact of success. In this case, positioning police vehicles in specific areas throughout the city identified as traffic problems,” patrol sergeant Ivan Mendez said.

The Department issued more than 300 citations in September; roughly half of those citations attributing to speeding. Police said the result was a significant decrease in traffic collisions.

“There were fifty-nine traffic collisions in the month of August 2013, in comparison to only thirty in September. That is a significant decrease and we attribute, at least part of the decrease on the public’s increased awareness of driving safely and following the rules of the road,” Mendez said. “With the holidays just around the corner, we urge people to use extra precaution whenever on the roadway; whether traveling within Los Banos or afar.”
