LOS BANOS — The San Luis NWR in Los Banos will kick off National Wildlife Refuge Week with a special birding event called Big Sit from 6:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 13. The Big Sit is an annual, international, non-competitive birding event. The goal is to tally as many bird species that can be seen or heard during a 24-hour period. All birds must be seen or heard from inside a pre-determined 17-foot diameter circle, otherwise known as the sit zone. The sit zone is located at the entrance kiosk, across from the visitor center, near the main entrance accessed on Wolfsen Road. Participants can come and go as they wish throughout the day or may stay for as long as desired. Participants are also encouraged to bring a picnic breakfast, lunch or dinner. Also bring binoculars, hats, water, mosquito repellent and sunscreen.
