Pachecos golf team earned its first Western Athletic Conference victory Wednesday in a 254-260 win over Central Valley at the Forebay Golf Course in Santa Nella, Pachecos home course.
Pacheco sophomore Jasmine Yruegas led the Panthers with a 54 on the 36-par course, followed by Edna Diazs 62. Kaylin Lambert, Breana Rodriguez and Adrianna Rodriguez each carded a 69, followed by Mykle Websters 72.
It was exciting. They looked at me and said, did we win? They saw the score, but it was the reality of it, Pacheco coach Laura Barger said. We opened the season playing the top two teams Central Catholic and Ceres so thats how we started. We have three matches this week, I said dont worry about it, because our scores were better than the last few seasons.
I said, dont worry about that. We just want to be competitive. I said, this week, we have a chance, but play your game. We have no control over what they do. We control what we do. They did what they could and waited until the end to find out.
Central Valleys Marlen Diaz carded a match-high 42, but the rest of the CV scores were over 70. On the same course, Los Banos dropped its match to Ceres, which is chasing Central Catholic in the league standings.
Barger said the victory should give the Panthers (1-3) a boost of confidence with the WAC midseason tournament coming up next Thursday.
We only had two girls return this year, so we had four girls that are first-year players. Theyre still learning the rules, and which clubs to hit with, Barger said. They played to their best, all six of them. The returning girls will tell you, it wasnt a good game for them. But dont we all do that? They sat down and said I could have done better. They were critiquing themselves.
Thats very important because we cant coach out there. The only people they can talk to is their teammates thats the only ones that can help them. So for them to critique themselves is very important. I can tell them afterwards, this is what I saw, but its not like they can correct that overnight, especially since we dont have a day of practice this week.
