A Los Banos police officer shot and killed a man Monday after allegedly being attacked with a pair of scissors, law enforcement officials said.

According to Cmdr. Ray Reyna Jr., police responded to a residence in the 600 Block of Vine Street regarding an assault on an 80-year-old male. Police said the victim reported being assaulted by his son, 43, at the home they share.

Police said a male officer, whose name is being withheld, was speaking to the elderly man while conducting a welfare check when the son reportedly stabbed the officer in the left arm with a pair of scissors. The officer drew his gun and struggled with the 43-year-old for control, police said.

The officer fired the weapon twice, striking the suspect in his chest and left leg.

Paramedics administered first aid to the suspect at the scene. He was airlifted to a Modesto area hospital, where he died during surgery, police said.

Police said the officer was treated for the injury to his left arm at Memorial Hospital, Los Banos, and was released.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is a common procedure in an officer-involved shooting, pending the outcome of an investigation.
