The Planning Commission approved a permit for a large family day care and welcomed a new member Wednesday.
In a 5-0 vote, Little Pathways Preschool and Daycare on the 1400 block of Pintail Circle was granted a use permit to allow up to 14 children ages 3 to 5 to attend. Commissioners Susan Toscano and Tracey Rosin were not present.
The facility, which is operated by Lurdes Parra out of a home, is considered a large family day care by state regulations based on the number of children it's permitted to enroll.
Commissioners were limited to regulating four areas noise, parking, traffic and space (play area).
"Planning Commission doesn't have much leeway, only four areas we can try to look at," Commissioner Arkady Faktorovich said.
He said he was interested in how many people are working at the day care because a certain number of children requires help. The owner has one employee.
Commissioner Tom Spada said he believes the facility fills a need in Los Banos.
"There are many people that commute in this town and children have to have a place to be taken care of in a constructive way," Spada said. "It's a good deal."
Also at the meeting, the commission welcomed Jose Gonzalez to the board. Gonzalez replaces former commission Chairwoman Chandra Lee who resigned two months ago. Gonzalez said he's lived in San Jose and Mexico, but is new to Los Banos and looking forward to being part of the community.
The next Planning Commission meeting is scheduled for Aug. 28. Assistant Planner Stacy Elms said a relocation of the Circle K on Mercey Springs Road is expected to be on the agenda.
