Tune-up meet canceled, but it's full steam ahead

The Los Banos Tiger Sharks' final meet of the regular summer season was canceled on Friday due to issues with the pool.

Tiger Sharks coach Drew Guintini said the missed meet wouldn't affect the four-meet rule for swimmers to compete in the Merced County Swim League championships this weekend in Dos Palos, saying the league ruled it counts as a meet swam for both Los Banos and Atwater.

With the championships looming, Guintini said the training would taper off this week and concentrate more on technique than conditioning.

Los Banos won the MCSL championships for 18 straight years before finishing third last year.

The Los Banos branch of the Merced Skimmers, meanwhile, are preparing for their own big meet, the Central California Junior Olympics.

The Skimmers are sending Los Banos swimmers Gabriel Andrade, Olivia Andrade, Patrick Andrade, Paige Roseman, Katie Roseman, Emily Trejo and Christian Wakefield — seven of the 29 Merced Skimmers that qualified. The meet started Thursday and continues to Sunday at Central High School.
