Man accused of assaulting Los Banos police officer

July 17, 2013

A 30-year-old Gilroy man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly assaulting a Los Banos police officer, according to Cmdr. Ray Reyna Jr.

Police responded to the corner of Pacheco Boulevard and Miller Lane around 5 p.m. after a caller reported a man was panhandling and urinating in public.

Near the intersection, Los Banos police officer Alfonso Flores found 30-year-old Hildebrando Rojas Vargas, according to police.

When the officer began asking him questions, Vargas became uncooperative and resisted arrest, police said. While being handcuffed, police said, Vargas hit Flores several times in the face and ripped the officer’s uniform shirt.

Police said Vargas continued to resist arrest despite being pepper sprayed and struck with an expandable baton. The man was handcuffed after being shocked with a Taser.

Police said Vargas was also in the possession of a knife.

"Officer Flores did an outstanding job after being placed in a very dangerous situation," Reyna said, in a press release.

Police also discovered that Vargas had two outstanding warrants -- a Santa Clara County warrant for failing to register as a sex offender and a San Jose warrant for resisting arrest.

Vargas is being held in the Merced County Jail without bail for suspicion of resisting arrest with violence, battery against a law enforcement officer, obstructing or resisting a law enforcement officer, assault with a dangerous weapon, criminal threats and the active warrants.
