A pair of men who fled a police checkpoint were arrested last week after a short pursuit, police said.

Officer Sean Bayard stopped a white Jeep Cherokee in the 500 block of West J Street for speeding during a DUI checkpoint at 10:38 p.m. July 4, police said.

As Bayard approached the vehicle, the driver sped away, with police in pursuit.

About a mile later, the driver stopped the vehicle in the 900 Block of Granada Circle and the passenger ran.

Angel Anthony Navarro, 22, the driver, was placed under arrest on suspicion of obstructing or resisting a law enforcement officer and failing to yield to a law enforcement vehicle.

Sgt. Ivan Mendez later located the passenger, Richard Esparza, 26, near Pennsylvania Avenue and Pine Street, police said. Esparza was arrested on suspicion of resisting or obstructing a law enforcement officer.

Both men were booked into the Los Banos Jail and released from custody. They are scheduled to appear in Merced County Superior Court.
