Bringing back baton twirlers

June 26, 2013

Los Banos High School dropped a great tradition: It has not had Majorettes since 1995. Fortunately, that has changed. This year one student decided it was time to bring back the batons. In February, Sophie Perez, 16, then a junior, resolved she was going to twirl with the band for the May Day parade. She recruited help and held a bake sale to raise funds. Two months of practice with a 40-year-old baton, and an altered uniform from the 1980s, and she took first in her division. For the new band season, Sophie has recruited several other wanna-be twirlers and they have already commenced to practice. They hope to spark the interest of prior LBHS Majorettes for ideas, and to raise funds for uniforms, boots and lighted batons.
