San Jose-area man's body recovered from O'Neill Forebay

June 10, 2013

California State Park Rangers Monday recovered the body of a San Jose-area man who drowned the previous day.

Supervising Ranger Steve Barber said the man, whose name and age have not been released, was pulled from the O’Neill Forebay around 2:35 p.m. Monday.

“A body has been located, and has been turned over to the coroner,” Barber said.

The man went swimming around 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Barber said, off of the southern beach of the O’Neill Forebay, which is the forebay to the San Luis Reservoir near Los Banos.

Witnesses said the man went under the water, came back to the surface and went under again before disappearing, according to Barber. The man knew how to swim, he said.

Units searched for the man from 12:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday. They resumed the search around 9 a.m. Monday, Barber said.

The man was not wearing a lifejacket and no lifeguard was on duty, Barber said. Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to have contributed to the incident, he said.
