Monstrous good time lined up for movie night

Some of the most popular monsters in film history will be unleashed at Henry Miller Plaza in animated form later this month.

The Los Banos Parks and Recreation Division is teaming with its Merced County counterpart and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. for a free showing of "Hotel Transylvania" on June 21 at 9 p.m. for the first Movie in the Park event this year.

The 2012 film tells the story of Dracula as a hotel owner whose regular clientele are monsters. He invites Frankenstein's monster, the Mummy, the Invisible Man and others, to celebrate the 118th birthday of his daughter Mavis. Dracula attempts to prevent his daughter from falling for a human who visits the hotel.

A few vendors will offer popcorn, churros and water for sale. PG&E is sponsoring the event, which costs about $1,400 for part-time staff, film rights and other expenses.

Ann McCauley, event organizer, said moviegoers should bring lawn chairs and arrive at the plaza about 7:30 p.m. to ensure a good spot for viewing.

McCauley said she believes the event is popular in Los Banos because it only occurs one to two times a year.

"We don't have it real often, so it keeps the enthusiasm level up. If we were doing it every month, we'd get less people because it's like it's always there," McCauley said.

Merced County Parks and Recreation will provide the equipment to show the film. The county works with communities that can provide sponsorship. McCauley said PG&E specifically targeted Los Banos for event sponsorship this year. She said the utility company alternates which communities in Merced County it provides movie funding to, and in 2013 it's Los Banos' turn.

McCauley said she's optimistic that a second Movie in the Park event can be held later this year.

"I'm waiting for a date that will work. We don't want to show a movie when there's a (high school) football game. Some people have small kids and older kids too."
