Stephen Hammond: ‘Matters of the Heart’ sermons continue at Bethel church

By Stephen HammondMay 30, 2013

God is good and faithful to His people. Even when we are unfaithful, He remains faithful.

I am overwhelmed at the response to the last two weeks of services. God is doing a good work in the hearts and lives of His people at Bethel Community Church. I am so proud of each and every one who is allowing God to do a good and deep work in our hearts and lives.

Last Sunday I started a new series called "Matters of the Heart" and talked about the fact that God looks on the heart and man looks on the outward appearance.

What does God see when He looks into our heart? Scripture describes what a heart without God looks like. It says that it is full of iniquity, it loves evil, it is a fountain of evil, it is wayward, it is blind, it is divided, it is hard, it is deceitful, it is proud, it is subtle, it is sensual, it is worldly, it is hardened, it is malicious, it is impenitent, it is diabolical, it is covetous, it is foolish.

While a heart with God living in it is regenerated, it is gracious, it is strengthened, it is enlightened, it is tested, it is obedient, it is faithful, it trusts, it loves, it fears God, it shows fidelity, it has zeal, it seeks God, it is joyful, it is upright, it is clean, it is pure, it is sincere, it is repentant, it is devout, it is wise, it is tender, it is holy, it is compassionate, it is lowly.

Which set of characteristics does God see in your heart today?

Another aspect of the heart I discussed was that of a broken heart. I was blown away at how many people are dealing, in some way or another, with a broken heart.

I want each and every one of you to know that God is close to the brokehearted and that He saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). Another scripture that shows God's heart for His hurting people is Psalm 147:3 which says, "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

God is close by with healing and love in His hands as He wraps His loving arms around His people. What a comforting thought.

Sunday will be the next sermon on matters of the heart. We will talk about David's cry to create in me a clean heart.

God Bless and I hope to see each of you in church on Sunday.
