A trio of Los Banos High seniors have been selected to play in the 40th annual Lions International District 4-A1 All-Star Football Classic at June 15 at Modesto Junior College.

LB's all-time leading rusher James Sams, quarterback Chris Corpuz and defensive back Delvonte Moore were all invited to play in the game -- although Los Banos coach Dustin Caropreso said he doesn't think Moore is playing due to commitments with City College of San Francisco's football program.

"Experience wise, it's great," Caropreso said. "In the past, they used to room up at Stanislaus, and I think they still do. It gives them that dorm experience.

"Plus, they play against guys that are as good or better than them. There's times a guy goes to one of these things and shines, and some school that missed out on someone will pick him up."

Sams carried the ball 258 times this season, racking up 2,008 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Corpuz completed 121 of 213 passes for 2,170 yards, with 33 touchdowns to 7 interceptions (three of which came in one game, a win over Livingston late in the season).

Moore racked up statistics from nearly every position on the field -- 52 carries for 470 yards and 6 touchdowns, 15 catches for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns, 32 tackles, 5 interceptions and a pair of fumble recoveries.

Caropreso played in one all-star game as a senior -- the Rotary North-South All-Star Game -- and coached in the Lions game a few years ago when he was offensive coordinator under Dennis Stubbs.

"I met some guys the I still keep in touch with. And you meet some great coaches. There's guys that I'm still friends with," Caropreso said. "It's how much you want to make of it. If you want to make it fun, it'll be fun. Those guys have great attitudes, so they'll have a blast."

While Moore is trying to catch on with CCSF, Sams and teammates Keith Turner (who will play in the North-South Rotary game later in the month), Markus Rico and Dretel Blackwell have been working out at the Modesto JC football team's rookie camp for several weeks. Corpuz is headed to Sacramento State to pursue academics.

LB's only player in last year's game was lineman Bryce Howard, who is now at Menlo College.
