A man was arrested Monday night on charges of tampering with a vehicle at an auto mechanic shop, police said. The Los Banos Police Department responded to a mechanic shop in the 2500 Block of East Pacheco Boulevardat 11:32p.m. regarding a suspicious vehicle on the property. Officer Vanus Warren spokewiththe 64-year-old property owner. Police said the the man toldWarrenheobserveda 1991 GMC Jimmy SUV and a male near his business. The man told police he believed someone was hiding on the property. Officers searched the area and found Justin Perdew, 25, ofMidPines,hiding near a vehicle. Police said they discovered lug nuts on the ground next to Perdew. They belonged to a vehicle parked on the lot, police said. Perdew also had tools toremovethelugnuts,police said.
Officers suspect he was attempting to steal tires from the automobiles on the lot. Perdew was on probation in Mariposa County for burglary, police said. Perdewwas arrestedon suspicion of vehicle tampering and trespassing. He was booked into the Los Banos Police Department jail before being cited and released. No damage was reported to the victims business. Perdew is scheduled to appear in Merced County Superior Court.
