The Los Banos Basque Club will celebrate its annual picnic next week.
The Los Banos Basque Club will hold the Basque Festival and Picnic from noon to 2 p.m. May 18 at the Los Banos Fairgrounds, 403 F St. Lunch tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children younger than 12 years old.
It will be the 49th time the fine folks of our community come together to celebrate and participate in the Basque culture, indulge in Basque food and throw caution to the wind by dancing along to the sweet sounds of an accordion.
The Basque picnic has always been a place where people far and wide, Basque and non-Basque, unite in mutual carousal.
So, after a much-needed weekend respite to regroup from the festivities during the May Day Fair, the Los Banos Basque Club is calling on all fiesta-revelers to return to the fairgrounds on May 18 to once again test the limits of their stomach capacity (this time with a feast of lamb chops, lamb stew, beans, salad, French bread and cheese).
There will be a log-chopping contest put on by the professionals and a weight-carrying contest open to all those who want to throw their hat into the ring.
The Los Banos and San Francisco Basque Dancers will perform traditional Basque dances, the bar will be serving drinks all day and in the evening chorizo sandwiches will be available for purchase.
Picnic-goers will also be able to purchase lamb sandwiches which were recently awarded the honorary blue ribbon for best sandwich at the May Day Fair.
Jean Fletcher will perform and the public will be welcome to the dance floor.
A Mass with the Rev. Mike Lastiri will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Call (209) 383-5588 or (209) 604-4477 for more information.
