Los Banos tennis falls to Pacheco

Pacheco High's tennis team earned its second win of the season Monday 6-3 against cross-town rival Los Banos.

"It means a lot -- it's what the guys worked up for all year, to be competitive, which they have been all year, and win a few, which they have also this year," Pacheco coach Cory Henwood said. "Especially against, you know, rival Los Banos, which has a good program and a good coach, so it's a big win for us."

Los Banos dominated the top end of the singles, with J.T. Barcellos winning 6-0, 6-0, Clarke Monroe winning 6-0, 6-3 and Luis Sanchez winning 6-2, 6-2. Beyond that, four of the remaining matches went to third sets, with Pacheco winning all of them -- starting with Rolando Velazquez 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 over Josh Carlucci and Ismael Orozco 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

"This means a lot, because it's my first win ever, and if I hadn't won, I don't think the team would have won," said senior Rolando Velazquez, who has been with the tennis program since it started with just a handful of players. "After the first set I realized I needed to hold back and play defensive, let him make mistakes."

When the singles were complete and the No. 1 doubles match went to David Posadas and Marcos Vizcarra 7-6, 6-3, Pacheco held a 4-3 lead and needed just one third-set win from its other doubles teams.

Cristian Gonzalez and Jose Ruelas gave them that win with a 6-0 sweep of Angel Rios and Jacob Manriquez at No. 2 doubles, and Chris Ballesteros and Angel Lopez added a 6-3 win for good measure.

"I think the will to win -- and some of those guys got their first wins -- and I think the will to win kicked in," Henwood said. "And maybe they caught the other guys playing a little lax and took it to them."

Pacheco has seen steady improvement this year, the team's first with seniors.

"They've definitely gotten better. More than half of the guys have never played tennis before," Henwood said. "They have improved. We've won a couple and been close in every one. They realized after they played their first few games that they could hang with guys that have been playing for a few seasons."
