After defeating Patterson on Friday, the Los Banos swim team placed three swimmers and a relay team in the top three at the ninth annual Stanislaus County Southern Section Swimming and Diving Invitational on Saturday at Johansen High.

LB's boys placed third overall with 192 points, behind Merced's 390 and Oakdale's 195.

"That was the highest I can ever remember placing. The boys, it was a really good day for them," Los Banos coach Drew Guintini said. "We didn't have everybody there, so for them to do that was pretty amazing."

LB's Kyren DiMarzio placed third in the 100-yard butterfly (55.96 seconds), Nathan Vander Poel was third in the 100-yard freestyle (53.05) and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of DiMarzio, Vander Poel, Jerome Vander Poel and Anthony Machado placed third (1:35.19).

"Nathan had one of his best times in the 100 freestyle," Guintini said. "He's looking to drop that time some more, and I think he will."

LB's girls were 11th, with league foe Ceres a few spots behind at 14th.

LB's Mayra Garcia placed third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.87) in a close finish with second-place Carly Wickman of Downey (1:03.70).

"Mayra did really well. It was a close race. I would call it a photo finish," Guintini said. "There was one that was a little more ahead, but second and third, if you were going off of the stopwatch, could have gone either way. But touchpads don't lie."

The meet gave the Tigers a preview of what to expect at the section championships, which are coming up.

"Right now looking like we're going to take about 16 kids to sections, which is about par for us," Guintini said.

The Western Athletic Conference league meet is April 26 and 27 at Pacheco High.
