A scheduling anomaly, along with Pacheco's athletic fields layout, led to a cancellation for the Panthers' girls soccer team on Tuesday.
With PHS's soccer scheduled against Ceres at the same time the baseball team was playing Central Valley, the referees worried about a safety issue with the north half of the soccer field in prime foul ball territory.
Pacheco played its soccer games on the field bordered by Snow Goose Drive last year, but complaints about the field's condition led to a move to the current field.
After discussing the situation with Pacheco coach Daniel Elizalde and Ceres coach Randy Cerny for about 10 minutes, the referees reluctantly let the game begin. But when Ceres was driving toward Pacheco's goal, a foul ball landed in the middle of the action, prompting the officials to call off the game five minutes in.
The game went into the books as a 0-0 tie since Ceres didn't want to make a return trip, according to PHS athletic director Charlie Pikas.
