Hundreds ate, drank and made merry last week while lining the coffers of two Los Banos nonprofits.

"I like the food, I like the wine and I like meeting people," said 59-year-old Herman Jackson.

Los Banos Rotary Club's Crab Feed and Soroptimist International of Los Banos' Wine & Tapas event used food as fundraisers April 5 to pay into local scholarships and programs, as well as global projects.

Jackson, who works in electronics in the Bay Area, said he's lived in Los Banos for 20 years but rarely gets to meet new people in town.

Soroptimist President Sandy Lemas said Wine & Tapas, which is in its first year, and events like it are a large part of her nonprofit's funding.

Soroptimist is a volunteer service organization for women.

"(The money) goes into our local community service projects," Lemas said.

The nonprofit gives out several college scholarships every year to girls and women during an awards night, and it puts on a self-esteem event for girls. Soroptimists also do some work in relation to human trafficking.

Organizers said the night of raffles and games, wine and appetizers and music at the Ted Falasco Arts Center is expected to bring in about $5,000 from the more than 200 tickets sold. Prizes came from Soroptimists and local business owners.

Rotarians said nearly a ton of Dungeness crab fed more than 400 at the Los Banos Fairgrounds.

Rotary President Brenda Latham said she expects to see between $15,000 and $20,000 from the ticket sales and raffle of the annual event. The raffle items came from local businesses and Rotarians.

"This is our main fundraiser in the year that supports all of our good works," Latham said.

Rotary supports high school sober graduations and Interact clubs, which is a junior version of Rotary. The nonprofit funds its share of scholarships, as well as fresh water initiatives in developing countries, among other causes.
