The Planning Commission on Wednesday gave an auto repair business special permission to open in an industrial zone.
Rogers' Garage, an automotive and equipment shop, wants to open at 110 West G St. The area is zoned for general industrial uses.
"There's some flexibility in the (municipal) code, but what's great is the code says 'and all uses deemed appropriate by the Planning Commission,' " said Assistant Planner Stacy Souza Elms. "So we thought it would be appropriate to bring this to the commission and let them decide."
Souza Elms said the auto shop would normally be allowed in commercial or highway commercial zones.
The building at West G Street was home to Electrical Distributors Co.
Community Development Director Paula Fitzgerald said the business moved, which has left the G Street structure vacant for some time.
Fitzgerald said the lease agreement Rogers' Garage has with the owners mirrors some of the conditions of approval the city has set. Among the conditions are that car repairs be contained inside the shop and oils and solvents be kept off the asphalt.
Commissioners approved the auto shop's use permit application in a unanimous vote.
"Being that it was already a shop, it's a good use of the building," said Chandra Lee, chairwoman. "I'm OK with it."
Also, a hearing for an alcohol license application for Dollar General Market was continued.
The store will be a block north of New Canaan Baptist Church.
In 2008, members of the church objected to Rite Aid's relocation plans. The congregation was fearful patrons buying hard liquor would cause problems. Rite Aid put its relocation from Pacheco Boulevard on hold because of the economy.
Dollar General Market is expected to open in a few months.
