Dos Palos coach bids farewell

Dos Palos High School will have a new football coach for the 2013 season.

DPHS athletic director Nikki Pigg confirmed Tuesday that Frank Lemos has stepped down as head coach to take an administrative job as principal of the Dos Palos-Oro Loma Joint Unified School District's alternative education program. Pigg declined to comment further on Lemos' departure from the program, but said the school began the hiring process March 25 and hopes to have a new coach installed by mid-May.

Lemos is also vacating the head wrestling coach position.

Lemos took over the football program in 2011 as its 11th head coach. He served 10 years as offensive line coach under longtime coach Mike Sparks, who retired that year as the program's winningest coach after taking over in 1988 from then-wins leader Tom Scheidt.

Lemos was at Dos Palos High for 23 years total.

The Broncos were 9-13 in Lemos' two years at the helm -- 5-6 in 2011 and 4-7 in 2012, with first-round playoff exits both years.

Lemos felt pressure at the beginning of the 2011 season when DP started 0-3 before finally defeating Kerman 35-6, then again in 2012 when the Broncos were winless through preseason play at 0-5.

DP's first win in 2012 came in a 28-14 win over Mendota, which was on a 17-game winning streak.

Lemos did not return calls from the Enterprise for comment.
