A Dixieland-playing eight-piece arrangement of musicians who borrow their name from Mount Diablo are set to return later this month.

The Devil Mountain Jazz Band, a Contra Costa County-based group will play at 2 p.m. April 21 at the Ted Falasco Arts Center, 1105 Fifth St. The purveyors of ragtime and other music popular from the turn of the 20th century to the Great Depression played Los Banos in 2011.

"The new stuff we're doing now is of Bing Crosby, before his crooner days, when he was a jazz singer," band leader Ken Keeler said.

Because Devil Mountain adds an extra trumpet to what would traditionally be a seven-member arrangement, it's able to churn out unique sounds. One of those trumpet players also sounds similar to Crosby, Keeler said.

The members of Devil Mountain fancy themselves as sort of curators of the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Joe "King" Oliver, Duke Ellington and their peers.

Along with the songs of early 20th century, Devil Mountain is known to offer up a history lesson about the composers.

The band's schedule has them bouncing around California's capital and the Bay Area.

Tickets are available at the door for $20.

Artwork display is new

The work of local artists will also decorate the walls of the Arts Center April 21.

Concert Series organizer Cyndi Roelofs said that's a new venture for the council.

"We are going to try to have an artist display work at each concert from now on," Roelofs said, in an email.
