Both Los Banos and Pacheco's wrestling teams hit the Westside Invitational on Saturday in Firebaugh, with the Tigers taking third with 119 points.
Host Firebaugh won the Central Section-heavy meet with 187, followed by Central with 125.
Los Banos was second in the standings heading into the championship round and got bumped by Central's three individual champions. Though LB placed four wrestlers in championship matches, only Dretel Blackwell won at 195 pounds when he defeated Firebaugh's Aaron Caballero 6-3.
"It's kind of on the upward bound for him. He's been making progress all season, he works hard at practice, he goes into tournaments aggressive and competitive, and he wants to win," Los Banos coach Josh Adams said. "He wrestled the Firebaugh kid in the finals, and he's just peaking at the right time."
LB heavyweight Armando Pelayo lost to Madera's Roy Powell 6-3, 160-pounder Marcus Carrillo lost by pin to Liberty's Mason Temple and 132-pounder Jimmy Felix lost 8-5 to Firebaugh's Aaron Mora. It was the fourth time this season that Felix and Mora wrestled, with Mora winning all four. Three other LB wrestlers placed in the top four -- Riko Quintana (third at 120 pounds), Gabe Mendoza (fourth at 138) and Phillip Martinez (fourth at 152).
"The placing was high, and the four finalists was a big deal, so that was cool," Adams said. "It's a good local tournament. It was tough in some matches."
Pacheco also put three wrestlers on the medal stand -- Robert Burkart was third at 170; Nathan Hernandez was fourth at 195 and Nick Vermillion was fourth at 220.
The tournament also offered Los Banos and Pacheco wrestlers an early look at each other. Wrestlers from the two schools met six times, with Los Banos winning four of those matches.
"It was almost like a dual meet in the second round. And that's fine," Adams said. "There's a couple of weights they're tough in, but some of them I didn't really know, so it was nice to see them in a match."
