The Merced County Regional Waste Management Authority plans a household hazardous waste event at the Highway 59 landfill Jan. 18 for conditionally exempt small quantity generators and Jan. 19 for residents.

The collections are by appointment only.

Hazardous waste is any leftover household product that contains ingredients that are "corrosive," "reactive," "ignitable/flammable" and/or "toxic," which includes ammonia-based cleaners, non-empty aerosol cans (empty ones can be placed into a curbside recycling can), automotive and household batteries, paints, pool chemicals, solvents, expired prescriptive medications and used motor oil.
