Tens of thousands of people, united by grief, are preparing for the Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting at 7 p.m. Dec. 9, and Los Banos is no different.
"This will be the 13th year that our community will participate and honor the children who have died," according to organizers.
People light candles for one hour to honor the memory of children who have died. The candles are lit at 7 p.m. in New Zealand. As candles burn down in each time zone, they are then lit in the next. This creates a virtual 24-hour wave of light as the observance continues around the world.
Communities observe with friends and family, or in an organized candle-lighting ceremony.
Los Banos will be holding its candle-lighting ceremony at 6:45 p.m. Dec. 9 at Pacheco Park, Seventh Street and Pacheco Boulevard.
Organizers hope the program helps people realize that they are not alone and that their child is not forgotten.
"It is our hope that the evening will bring comfort to grieving families, whether it has been a day or decades since their loss," organizers said.
Candles will be provided. People also can participate at home.
"There is a PowerPoint presentation with pictures of children our community has lost," organizers said.
Photos for the PowerPoint presentation should be taken to Copy Shipping Solutions, at 1017 I St., before Dec. 4.
Those who have submitted a photo in the past and wish for it to remain in the program, should call Stacy at (209) 826-2828. Photos may also be brought to be displayed at a photo table.
