Salcido advances to state meet

Ryan Salcido has run out of goals to accomplish this season. So he made some new ones.
The Pacheco runner clocked a 16 minutes, 19 seconds in the Division 3 race of the Sac-Joaquin Section Cross Country Championships Saturday at Willow Hill in Folsom, breaking both his hill-course personal best (16:39 set the week before at subsections and his flat-course best of 16:32) to accomplish his season goal of qualifying to the state championship meet.
That time put him in eighth place, the last individual qualification spot (the top three teams plus the top five individuals moved on).
"It feels amazing. I worked all year, all summer long for this," Salcido said. "I honestly didn't think everything was going to happen, but now I have to make new goals."
Those new goals include something that was unthinkable to him at the beginning of the year -- to medal at the CIF State Cross Country Championship Division IV race. To do that, Salcido thinks he would need to run somewhere around a 15:30 or 15:45. Just another 40 or so seconds to lop off his time.
But then, cutting 20 seconds off his previous time seemed insurmountable as well, before he spent the first part of last week running hills dragging behind a tire tied to his waist.
"I used (the hills) to my advantage. I beat a lot of people on there," Salcido said. "I did what my coach told me, and beat people there and kept it on the flat part."
It helped to have a crew of teammates spread around the course to call out his time and place as he jogged by.
Salcido will race at the state meet Nov. 24 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Los Banos had two runners in the D-4 varsity boys race (Christian Beltran was 16th at 17:28 and Michael Salaz was 51st at 18:36) plus two in the varsity girls race (Sara Gama was 29th at 21:43 and Brittney Berek was 55th at 23:08).
LB's Steve Georgiou medaled in the D-4 sophomore boys race with a 12:18 on the 2-mile course, which Pacheco's Emily Barajas took 13th in the D-3-4-5 girls race at 23:31.
