Arlene Cardoza: Chamber serves community

November 3, 2012

As a member of the Los Banos Chamber of Commerce board of directors, I am appalled by comments made by Joe Sousa at the Oct. 15 forum. Your comments are without merit showing your total lack of knowledge in regards to the chamber and its benefits.

Mr. Sousa expressed that the chamber does not need to do street faires, Tomato Festivals, Wine Strolls and Christmas Evenings Downtown, etc. How do you expect the chamber to raise funds to cover operating expenses?

While these events are going on, tax dollars are being generated from motels, gas stations, restaurants and tourism. These tax dollars go directly to the city's general fund, which partially funds public safety.

Chamber membership fees are not enough to cover expenses.

The chamber sponsors the Christmas parade, not the city. The chamber has promoted the "buy local" campaign to support our local businesses. All of these events are provided by members of the chamber on a volunteer basis. Some of these events are break-even and some are costly, but we continue to pursue them because we believe in our community.
