A man is in custody after accidently shooting himself during an alleged domestic violence incident involving his wife, according to law enforcement.
Police responded to Memorial Hospital, Los Banos Monday at 3:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg.
Officers spoke with Larry Briggs, 58,of Los Banos, about his injury. Briggs reportedly told police he was shot at by several gang members while walking near his home.
Officers and medical staff noticed the wounds appeared to be self inflicted and were not consistent with Briggs statement.
Once his story was questioned by authorities, Briggs became uncooperative, police said.
Upon Further investigation police concluded that Briggs accidently shot himself during a domestic violence incident with his wife.
Police allege that Briggs threatened his wife with a firearm and slapped her in the face.
Three firearms were confiscated from Briggs residence during the investigation.
Briggs was placed under arrest on suspicion of making criminal threats and inflicting injury upon a spouse or cohabitant.
Briggs is in custody at the Merced County Main Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
