Tire store coming to Pacheco Boulevard

Los Banos will be home to a Les Schwab Tire Center by September.

Last week the Planning Commission approved the site plan for a 12,000-square-foot store, which will be located on the north end of East Pacheco Boulevard directly east of España's Southwest Bar & Grill.

Michael Amabile, owner of España's, said he's happy with the deal.

"We've had this property since 1967, and we could've done something with that piece many times," he said. "Working with this family-oriented company really brought us to see what they could do."

Amabile said a monument, which exists near the area where Les Schwab will build, is going to be moved. Los Banos founder Henry Miller had his headquarters at the location.

Amabile said there are also trees on the land that were planted in 1890.

"We've transplanted a lot of them throughout town and they (Les Schwab) are going to save a few more," Amabile said.

Representatives working with Les Schwab speak highly of the business.

"They are not your typical tire center. They will run out and meet you in the parking lot, their goal is to meet your needs as fast as possible and get you back on the highway," said Craig Stockbridge of GBD Architects, the firm designing the tire center's Los Banos building. "They want the stores to represent their core values ... service (and) community involvement. They spend a lot of time supporting the local baseball team and the nonprofits of their neighborhood."

Les Schwab Tire Center plans to bring in management from stores from other locations, but will hire 15 to 20 employees from the area.
